Down’s Syndrome: If You Know It, You Can Beat It

Down’s Syndrome: If You Know It, You Can Beat It

What is Down’s Syndrome?

The most prevalent disorder caused by imbalance of genetic chromosomes, Down’s Syndrome, also referred to as Down Syndrome and Trisomy 21, is caused due to the presence of an extra Chromosome 21 copy (it may even be just a fraction). Down Syndrome is often characterized by intellectual disabilities, slow cognitive development, physical abnormalities, poor immunity and susceptibility to health problems such as leukemia, thyroid problems and heart diseases.

This Syndrome has been named after the British doctor, John Langdon Down, who was the first to describe it completely way back in 1866 when the syndrome and its symptoms were still a mystery to most of the medical community. Over the years, a lot of research has gone into the detection of this disorder and improvement of life quality for those suffering from it.

Common Down’s Syndrome Symptoms

Down’s Syndrome can be detected through prenatal screening during pregnancy and even post birth through general observation of Down’s Syndrome symptoms. Genetic testing can also detect Down’s Syndrome. Pregnancies are usually terminated post diagnosis.

Down’s Syndrome symptoms include slow mental development, intellectual disabilities and unusual physical features. Those suffering from Down ’s syndrome exhibit unique physical characteristics such as wide face, large tongue, slanting eyes that are not the result of ethnicity, flattened nose, abnormal shape of ears, unusual size and gap between fingers, shorter height, small chin etc. Young adults suffering from Down’s Syndrome have the IQ of an 8-9 year old child. Due to this, most patients find it difficult to live independently and need care of family members. The average life expectancy for Down Syndrome patients is 50-60 years.

Knowledge is Power

Research has shown that proper care and education can greatly improve the life-quality of Down’s Syndrome patients. Knowing about this syndrome, its symptoms and the ways to deal with those suffering from it can help the families of the affected deal with this disorder in a more effective manner and help the patients lead more rewarding and enriching lives. Ignorance, on the contrary, can cause deterioration of the condition.

In UK, Down’s Syndrome Association, a charitable organization, works tirelessly to ensure that people suffering from this disorder do not feel left out and are able to enjoy life to the fullest, just like their counterparts who are not affected by this unfortunate ailment. Down’s Syndrome Association teams up with medical experts, families, caretakers and volunteers to help patients become socially active and assertive so they can adapt to their surroundings more comfortably and feel happier.

This year Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week will be celebrated from 16th to 22nd March. During this week, the motive will not only be to spread awareness about this disorder but will also be to encourage Down’s Syndrome patients to become more active and socially involved. Patients and their families will also be made aware about how wearing medical ID jewelry such as medical ID bracelets and pendants can help Down’s Syndrome patients in receiving better care from medical organizations and sensitivity from strangers.
